With the difficulty of getting (and affording) a ticket to see the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Vipers have emerged in recent years as a competitor in the unquenchable thirst for hockey in southeastern Michigan. The Vipers play in the International Hockey League, an old and well-established "minor league" that is just one step below the NHL. Quality of play is sometimes uneven, but the game is accessible. The Vipers began playing at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the fall of 1994 after the franchise transferred from Salt Lake City. They occasionally draw near-capacity crowds in the 22,076-seat arena.
